Apparatus List 1892-2003

14th and Ohio Ave. NW 1018 13th Street NW
14th and Ohio Ave NW 1018 13th St. NW

Truck Company "C" opened on September 6th, 1891 at one of the largest firehouses in the city at the time, located at 14th Street and Ohio Avenue, NW. The first apparatus assigned to Truck "C" was a 75 foot Champion water-tower built by the International Fire Engine Company. On July 6, 1906, all ladder companies in the District were given numbers in place of the letter system.  Truck "C" was renumbered as Truck Company #3.

2003 Seagrave Baker Aerialscope 95' Tower Ladder

The modern Truck Company 3 operates a 2003 Baker Aerialscope 95' tower ladder, mounted on a 6-man Seagrave chassis. This is the only tower ladder in the District of Columbia. The city operates a total of 16 truck companies: 14 tractor-drawn aerials, 1 135' rear-mount, and Tower 3
Tower 3 operates with a crew of 4 privates (firemen) and an officer. For efficiency, riding assignments are used which reflect the typical operations of the company at incidents:
Truck Driver: Navigates to incident and positions apparatus for effective use of aerial and equipment. Throws ground ladders and begins horizontal ventilation.

Tower Operations
Officer: Commands operations of the company. Enters fire building with barman to initiate search, ventilation, and overhaul.

Barman: Provides entry for the engine company and begins primary search and ventilation from interior. Begins overhaul after fire is extinguished.

Hook man: Throws ground ladders and proceeds to roof via bucket when it is within reach. Initiates vertical ventilation. On high-rise fires will enter with Bucket Operator to open up stairwell bulkheads and search floors above.

Bucket Operator: Responsible for operation of the bucket, proceeds to roof with Hook man to open up vertically.
