The modern Engine Company 16, originally Chemical Company #1, was established on October 24, 1904 and originally located in the old Franklin Fire Company house at 12th and D Street, NW. Engine 16 moved in with Truck 3 at 14th & Ohio Ave, NW on June 30, 1931. This is the present location of the water fountain in front of the Ronald Reagan Building. On December 16, 1932, 16 Engine moved to the quarters of Truck Company "C" at 1018 13th St, NW, where they remain today.

Engine Company 16 operated a two-piece engine company out of these quarters until 1992, when the city consolidated the engines into single-piece companies. Previously, each company responded with both a wagon and a pumper. The wagon would lay from the water supply to the fire and the pumper would pick up its line.
From their quarters just north of DC's Franklin Square (13 & K, NW), Engine 16 is first due to the White House and responds first due to much of the downtown region of the Nation's Capitol. The box alarm district covers a much larger area that includes high-rises, row homes, taxpayers, and commercial occupancies.
