Lt. Darell Johnson E16#3 Platoon has been detailed to recruitment after a few years of dealing with us at Engine16 Number 3 platoon. Wagon Driver Tommy Keelan, wearing his emotions on his sleeves, spices things up a bit with some fake tears while attempting to get Chief Campbell to get Lt. Johnson's detail cancelled.
Seriously, Lt. Johnson will be missed by all of us at E16 Tower 3 Number 3 Platoon. He is a damn fine officer and an even better man. We wish him all the luck on the job and on the tennis court.
P.S. "Darell, Get off the floor." |

Black Smoke in Shaw Neighborhood |
#1 Platoon |
Black smoke spiraling high in the sky over the Shaw neighborhood heralded what turned out to be a somewhat less auspicious fire on Friday afternoon, September 14th.
A box alarm was sounded for the reported fire in the rear of a house in the 1600 block of 8th Street N.W. Units responding to what surely looked like a working blaze found flames engulfing debris, fence, tree and telephone pole in the rear alley.
Although the fire was quickly knocked down, it did cause considerable damage to the pole and corresponding phone lines, as well as charring the soffet of a structure directly across the alley.

901 15th St. NW for Smoke in the Building |
#3 Platoon |
The members of E16 and Truck 3 Platoon #3 were dispatched to 901 15th Street, NW for the investigation of smoke . Upon arrival, E16 found a 12 story Fire Resistive Office Building with normal conditions from side A and D of the exterior. As members made entry to the building, they encountered light smoke conditions in the hallway. The smoke was determined to be originating from a bank vault under construction on the main floor. E16 extended 100' of 1 1/2" and awaited for Squad 1 and Tower 3 to use saws and misc. handtools to open up the walls of the vault, which proved to be an extensive task. The exterior of the vault was a combination of steel and fiberglass reinforcement covering wooden framing. Once access to the wooden framing was gained E16 extinguished all fire. Tower 3 used misc fans to remove smoke from the building.
